Altcoin market tiers
| Tier | Examples | Typical risk |
|---|---|---|
| Large caps | ETH, SOL, XRP, BNB | High volatility, good liquidity |
| Mid caps | Established DeFi, layer-1 and layer-2 tokens | Very high volatility, thinner books |
| Small caps & meme coins | New launches, community tokens | Extreme volatility, manipulation and total-loss risk |
Examples are for illustration only and are not recommendations.
Liquidity comes first
Before analysing anything else, check 24-hour volume, order book depth and spread. In an illiquid coin, your stop loss can fill far below your stop price, and selling a large position can move the market against you. A simple rule: avoid coins where your position would be a noticeable share of the visible order book.
Tokenomics checklist
- Circulating vs fully diluted supply: a low float with a huge fully diluted valuation (FDV) means future selling pressure.
- Unlock schedule: team and investor unlocks often weigh on price around the unlock date.
- Distribution: if a few wallets hold most of the supply, they control the price.
- Utility and revenue: does the token capture fees or value from real usage?
- Inflation: high emissions from staking or farming dilute holders.
Narratives and rotations
Altcoins tend to move in sector waves, such as layer-2s, AI tokens, real-world assets (RWA), gaming or meme coins. Money often rotates from Bitcoin to Ethereum, then to large caps, then to small caps, near the late stage of a bull run. Recognising where the market is in that rotation helps with timing, and with knowing when to take profit.
Altseason signals traders watch
- Falling Bitcoin dominance while total crypto market cap rises.
- A rising ETH/BTC ratio.
- Rising stablecoin supply and exchange volumes.
- Retail euphoria: trending coins in app stores and social media. This is often a late signal.
Red flags and rug pulls
- Anonymous team with no track record, plus promises of guaranteed returns.
- Liquidity not locked, or contracts that allow minting or blocking sells.
- Paid influencer campaigns and pressure to "buy before it's too late".
- Tokens you can buy but cannot sell (honeypots).
Altcoin risk management
Because altcoins move so much, use smaller position sizes and wider stops than for Bitcoin, keeping the same account risk per trade. Take partial profits into strength, as altcoin rallies can reverse violently. Never hold your whole crypto allocation in small caps. The position size calculator handles the math.
Frequently asked questions
What is altseason?
Altseason is a period when altcoins broadly outperform Bitcoin, usually marked by falling Bitcoin dominance and rising ETH/BTC.
Are meme coins worth trading?
They are extremely speculative. Treat any money put into meme coins as money you could lose entirely, and keep the position tiny.
Why do altcoins fall more than Bitcoin?
They have less liquidity, more speculative holders and often ongoing token emissions, so selling pressure has a larger impact.
