How Ethereum differs from Bitcoin
Bitcoin is mainly a store of value with a fixed supply. Ethereum is a programmable blockchain: smart contracts run lending markets, exchanges, stablecoins and tokenised assets on it. Since "The Merge" in 2022, Ethereum uses proof-of-stake, and holders can stake ETH to help secure the network and earn rewards.
What drives the ETH price?
- Bitcoin's direction: ETH is highly correlated with BTC, usually with larger swings.
- Network activity: transactions, active addresses, DeFi total value locked (TVL) and stablecoin volume.
- Supply dynamics: part of every transaction fee is burned, so ETH supply can shrink when activity is high and grow when it is low.
- Staking: the share of ETH staked and the staking yield.
- Upgrades: major protocol upgrades and their timing.
- ETF flows: spot Ether ETFs launched in the US in 2024.
The ETH/BTC ratio
ETH/BTC tells you whether Ethereum is outperforming or underperforming Bitcoin. A rising ratio typically shows growing risk appetite and often comes before broader altcoin strength. A falling ratio means money prefers Bitcoin. Many traders decide whether to hold BTC or ETH based on the trend in this one chart.
Gas fees and layer-2 networks
Gas is the fee paid to process transactions on Ethereum. Layer-2 networks such as Arbitrum, Optimism and Base batch transactions and settle them on Ethereum, making activity much cheaper. For traders, L2s mean cheaper DEX trading, but they also add bridge risk. Check our security guide before moving funds across chains.
Ethereum trading strategies
Trade ETH/BTC rotations
When ETH/BTC breaks above a downtrend line on the weekly chart, some traders rotate part of their BTC into ETH, and rotate back when the trend breaks down.
Swing trading key levels
ETH respects round numbers and prior highs and lows. Combine horizontal levels with RSI divergence on the 4-hour chart for swing entries. See technical analysis.
Event-driven trades
Upgrades and ETF decisions are often "buy the rumour, sell the news" events. Reduce size into the event, as volatility can spike in either direction.
Staking vs trading
Staking earns a yield but may lock your ETH or involve a withdrawal queue, and liquid staking tokens add smart-contract risk. Traders who need flexibility usually keep their trading capital unstaked and separate from a long-term staked holding.
Frequently asked questions
Is Ethereum more volatile than Bitcoin?
Historically yes. ETH has tended to move more than BTC in both directions, so position sizes should usually be smaller.
What is the ETH/BTC ratio?
It is the price of one ETH measured in BTC. Traders use it to judge whether Ethereum is outperforming Bitcoin.
Can I stake ETH and trade it at the same time?
Not the same coins in most cases. Liquid staking tokens can be traded, but they add smart-contract and depeg risk.
